BACKGROUND: Nova Studios was an independent gay film and photo studio established by Scott Masters in 1977 to duplicate the business model incorporated by many of the more successful pornographers with the decriminalization of homoerotic literature in the early 1970's. After a number of legal victories, Falcon Studios began to distribute items nationwide through the postal service. Masters copied their business model and began distributing his magazines, films and related ephemera through mail order as well as through the traditional direct sales to adult bookstores. By cutting out the middle men he was able to increase his prices and invest in higher quality sets, equipment, make-up artists and larger cast of models. The studio would eventually become one of the top gay content publishers in the United States. Under Masters, Nova Studios developed the "West Coast Look" of gay pornography a "very stylized and highly planned" style that he incorporated in to their print, film and photo works. The studio closed in 1986 during the AIDS pandemic.
