House of Milan (HOM) was a successful woman owned publisher of bondage magazines and BDSM videos. Owned by fetish photographer Barbara Behr, HOM would become the most influential fetish erotica publisher in the United States. It originally started out in 1964 as Futura Fashions, a mail order fetish clothing and supply boutique operated by two friends in downtown Chicago. The name "House of Milan" came from the city of Milan, Illinois, not far from Chicago. The store became a huge success with their first fetish clothing catalog selling out shortly after its printing. By the 1970's the products offered by HOM had grown to include books, magazines and films which lead to a further surge in sales. As the demand for the HOM's published work soared, Behr moved their location to Southern California and focused the brand exclusively on published works of erotica. During Behr's tenure the studio was well known for the works of Robert Bishop which graced many of their covers. They published works by Brian Tarsis, SMS, Lou Kagan, Frank Campbell, John Savage and Geoffrey Merrick. HOM was considered one of the three big houses during the period known as the Golden Age of Bondage (GAB), along with Harmony Communications (later renamed to Harmony Concepts) and California Star (Calstar) from approximately the mid-1970s to the late 1990s. Of the three Houses' HOM was considered to be the most desirable for offering the models and creators most desired by its readers.
