BACKGROUND: Target Studios was founded by photographer and filmmaker Lou Thomas (nee. 1933) and his partner Bob Lewis in 1974. Thomas had previously been partnered with Jim French in Southern California running Colt Studio's. After their breakup he relocated to Canal Street in New York City and established Target. The new company relied on mailing lists of various physique-era companies that had recently folded, among them Kris of Chicago (Chuck Renslow). Target continued the business practices that Thomas had established at Colt. It sold a broad selection of published gay art including magazines, photo sets of nude models, lithographic prints, calendars, illustrations by Etienne and later 8mm films. Thomas shared several models with Colt Studio. Because of their past relationship and close working relationship both Colt and Target tended to mimic each other with hyper-masculine, mustache, and leather men during the 1970's and 1980's. Target is considered by many to be among the most important gay content production studio's during the Golden Age of Porn.
