ASS magazine was a one shot release by Shangri La Press, an avant garde erotica publisher prominent in the underground beatnik literary scene of San Francisco starting in the late 1960's. It was the creative genius of psychedelic artist Henry Hill whose art and design appear throughout the title. This is an erotic magazine unlike any other. It combines psychedelic art with beatnik erotica, pseudo-spiritual sexual iconography and hippie drug culture to give a deeply insightful view of the LSD counter culture that evolved in San Francisco at the beginning of the Sexual Revolution. Unfortunately because of its heavy emphasis on hallucinogenic drugs, the distributor Golden State News, only released it in California in fear of the possible criminal repercussion of distributing it in other less tolerant areas of the US. Too bad, as it is some of the finest psychedelic erotica from the time period to have been published. Our highest recommendations. 72 pages in length.
Henry Hill (1927 - ) Dr. Henry Hill was a prominent artist in the psychedelic art movement in California during the 1960's. Hill, a veteran of World War II who suffered PTSD, studied art in Los Angeles, where he became involved in Reichian therapy and L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics teachings. A dedicated lifelong LSD user, he was an associate of Timothy Leary and promoted the mental and physical health benefits of hallucinogenic drug counter culture in broader society. He ran for the US Senate in 1976 as a Republican but on a decidedly progressive Libertarian platform, especially with regards to the legalization of drugs, sexual orientation rights, and the rights of sex workers.
