DETAILS: III Three Magazine, Consolidated Publishing, Manhattan, 1969. Art by Eric Stanton.

One of the most shameful truths in the history of American porn magazines is that despite the fact that tens of thousands of different lesbian titles were published during the Golden Age of Porn (1967-1992), there were less than a handful that were actually published by women catering to the female gay community. Nearly all of the titles that were published were compiled by male publishers and marketed towards the straight male audiences. The female models depicted in them were primarily straight or bi curious women who played the role of female lesbians in order to satisfy the sexual curiosities and proclivities of male readers. Basically these were magazines produced by men with female models pretending to be gay and doing what the publishers felt male readers wanted to see.

III (Three) magazine was a very rare exception to this trend. Published by Consolidated Publications in New York City, it was put together by a number of gay and bi-sexual women . Though the magazine has an obvious gay lesbian slant its focus was broad enough that it also had a strong following among straight men. It's depiction of real gay female lovers and topics such as positive lesbian portrayals in sexploitation cinema allowed it to have a broader appeal than some of the more pro-feminist lesbian tabloid underground newspapers published at the time. Unlike those feminist underground's however, III  was willing to also depict women in pure naked sexual lust with detailed and kinky pictorials for both male and female audiences to observe. Kinky topics such as lesbian cross dressing, BDSM power relationships, lesbianism around the world, and female triad relationships were a regular feature in the magazine. As were the small touches such as lesbian inspired artwork and written captions depicting the soft and loving aspects of all female love. Unfortunately, it had a short print run. In that time it attained a cult like following among male and female readers both gay and straight! This title is literally unlike any other porn magazine published. Our highest recommendation.
